A Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is a skilled healthcare provider who works under the supervision of a Physical Therapist (PT). Duties include assisting the PT in implementing treatment programs, training patients in exercises and activities of daily living, administering therapeutic modalities and communicating with patients and other health care providers.

The PTA program at Delaware Technical & Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)*

Delaware Tech was one of only 35 accredited programs that had a final pass rate of 100
percent on the Naitonal Physical Therapist Assistant Examination during the three-year
period between 2002 and 2005.

Program Mission
To provide a comprehensive educational program to enable qualified students to acquire knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to be eligible for licensure and employment as a physical therapist assistant.

Faculty

Doug Huisenga is the Program Coordinator.  He received his Bachelor of Education (Athletic Training Program) degree from California University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and his Master of Physical Therapy from Gannon University in 1994.  He is both an athletic trainer and a physical therapist.  He came to Delaware Tech with 11 years of pediatric experience from DuPont Hospital for Children.  In addition, he has worked in multiple outpatient orthopedic facilities throughout the past 12 years. He currently teaches Intro to PTA, Pathology, Basic Techniques, Orthopedics, and Management. 

Jason A. Dougherty PTA, BS is the Coordinator of Clinical Education.  He joined the PTA program after practicing 9 years as a PTA with Dynamic Physical Therapy, Mercy and University of Pennsylvania Health Systems. He treated primarily in the outpatient setting across multiple patient populations. He was also an adjunct faculty member with Harcum College’s PTA program for 8 years teaching across the curriculum.   He completed his AS in Physical Therapy at Harcum College in 1998 and continued on to complete his BS at Neumann College.  Jason is certified by the American Physical Therapy Association as a Clinical Instructor and formerly held the programming chair with the southeastern district of the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association.
